The Handshake Foundation’s Arts program is fast becoming a sought after destination for students with an eye toward performing, production and digital arts.
Young photographers at Carson High School had the opportunity to meet and be mentored by top working professionals including Chris Polk at Getty Images. With school funding being cut, students learned the basics of photography by using their phones. The program is affectionately called, So Long Selfie, Hello World.
For twelve weeks, kids at the Boys & Girls club got insights and hands-on production experience in television and film production from working pros, including: line producer, Jason Kay; Camera Operator, Mark August and Executive Producer, Carl Buehl and Emmy award winner.
For the last three years, our students have been invited to meet and greet Directors of Photography at the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) in Hollywood. Here, kids chatted face to face with working experts on cameras lighting, production and got great tips on how to break in to the biz. Rubbing elbows with award winners wasn’t too bad either. John Toll; Braveheart & Legends of the Fall. Dean Cundey; Apollo 13 and Jurassic Park. It’s an experience they don’t offer or teach in school.
